Stratigraphic-paleontological studies and absolute geochronology are key tools for understanding the history of the Earth and its individual regions, as well as for deciphering the geological structure of specific areas. The reliability of paleontological and radiological dating is discussed, especially for the purposes of geological mapping. Based on reliability and geological significance, all dates (both radiological and paleontological) are divided into five categories: reference (R), reliable (N), probable (P), approximate (A), and unreliable (U). The criteria for assigning dates to these categories are discussed and examples from the history of the study of conodonts and geochronology in the Urals are given. The great role of Dr. V.A. Maslov and some other scientists in the stratigraphy studies of the Urals is noted.
