Summary:

On the territory of the projected “Toratau” geopark in the Gafuriysky, Ishimbaysky and Sterlitamaksky municipal districts of Bashkortostan Republic, one fi fth of all currently known karst caves of the South Ural and the Cis-Urals are located. The high speleological potential of the geopark with unique caves in gypsum of the Cis-Ural part of the karst-speleological country of the East European Plain and in the limestones of the South Ural karst-speleological province determines the prospects for organizing excursion objects on their basis for mass, scientifi c and sports visits, which makes necessary an assessment of their scientifi c and applied signifi cance. A method for determining the value of karst caves of the South Ural and Cis-Ural has been developed. Based on the scoring of the components of the cave environment, the scientifi c and applied signifi cance of the karst caves of the “Toratau” geopark was evaluated. The conservation status of each cave of the geopark is recommended. It was established that as of July 1, 2019, out of 228 karst caves known on its territory, 32 caves deserve environmental status as: geological nature monuments (23 pcs.), State nature monuments with custom regimen or landscape reserve components (4 pcs.), components of the national park (4 pcs.). One cave, Kinderlinskaya cave named after 30th anniversary of Victory, in its morphometric and morphological parameters, as well as the studied components of the cave environment, corresponds to a nature monument of federal signifi cance. Of all the elements of the caves of the geopark, their morphometry and morphology are relatively well studied, and other components of the cave environment have not been suffi ciently studied. Further study of the caves of the geopark can increase the value of a number of them, which will require a reassessment of the scientifi c and applied signifi cance of the caves of the geopark.
